Bengal Brings Back Sporting Glories for IndiaThe contribution of Bengal to sports in India has never been that glorious till recent time, when we have Calcutta boy Sourav Ganguli leading the Indian cricket side, East Bengal club winning first ever international football tournament, Leander Paes creating history in tennis, Ritwick Bhattacharya winning New Zealand PSA Squash tournament and Gagan Ajit Singh being established as one of the most attacking forwards in international hockey. The latest additions to the list is Mohammed Ali Qamar who won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Boxing at Kuala lumper. He is from the suburb of Ekbalpore in Calcutta. He defeated Naom Karim of Pakistan . He has now a good chance to qualify for Athens Olympics. There is more good news for Bengal sports. Mamani Mondal from Bongaon won two gold medals in diving at the Asian age group championship in Macao. She ,the daughter of a poor vegetable vendor, won in 1metre and 2 metre springboards. Her aim now is to win a medal at the next Afro Asian Games. [ back] |
